What is SuDS+?
SuDS+ is a research and development project in Stanley South which is looking at how Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) can provide wider benefits to the local community and their environment (+). We want to explore what the Memorial Park can look like and how it can be best designed to bring benefit to the environment and the people of Stanley. To hear more about the project and what is going on in your area by visiting our website and signing up to our newsletter.
Who owns and maintains the Memorial Park?
The Memorial Park is owned and maintained by Durham County Council and is designated as a recreational space for the enjoyment of the public. Several teams within the authority are involved in the maintenance of the park, depending on the individual feature and function, such as litter picking, bin emptying, play equipment, watercourses, woodlands, bridges and walkways.
How can I get involved?
Whether you would like to be involved in the design, some one off volunteer sessions, be involved in the ongoing use/maintenance of various park features, please get in touch with us at [email protected]. To be kept up to date with the developments at Memorial park and the project as a whole you can sign up to our newsletter here: https://stanleysuds.co.uk/sign-up-for-the-mailing-list
What is this activity all about?
Our interactive platform invites you to design your ideal vision for a better South Moor Memorial Park by placing items on the map representing different park features – from play areas to wildflower gardens. It’s your chance to shape the future of this cherished local space.
As this project is by SuDS+, you’ll also find information points with information about the flood mitigation measures we’re putting in place in the park.
How do I take part?
Simply drag and drop items onto the park map to design your version of an improved South Moor Memorial Park. You can add as many as you like, suggest alternatives and even submit new ideas with our comment items.
What do the cost, people and nature value mean?
Each item you place has a value. Cost represents a rough idea of how much the item would cost to build, while people and nature values show how much your idea could benefit the community or the environment. Try to balance all three – but remember, there are no right or wrong answers.
Is there a limit to how many items I can place?
There’s no hard limit, but we recommend trying to stay within a suggested token total and aiming to meet a soft minimum for people and nature benefits. This helps keep designs balanced and realistic. We’re excited to see your ideas!
Can I add my own ideas?
Yes! You can drop a pin anywhere on the map with your own suggestions. You can also use items representing experiences like “Healthy Activities” or “Community Meeting Spaces” to share what you’d like to see in the park.
Do I need to create an account to take part?
No account is needed. Just start designing. However, providing your email lets you stay updated and see what happens next with the park plans.
How will my submission be used?
Your ideas will help shape the future of South Moor Memorial Park, and help us understand local priorities and preferences. Our aim is to make the park a place for the whole community to enjoy.
Is this activity accessible?
The platform is designed to be mobile-first and inclusive– so people of all abilities can participate. The zoomable interactive map isn’t accessible, so if you are having difficulty with it, we also have an accessible survey. You could also reach out to us at [email protected] if you require more help.
Can I submit multiple answers?
Yes! We’re really excited to hear all your ideas, so feel free to try out the tool as many times as you like.
I’ve never taken part in a planning consultation before – is this still for me?
Absolutely! This tool is designed for everyone. It’s about imagining what you’d love to see in your local park. All views are welcome and valued.
I'm part of a group that would like to use this space. How can we get in touch?
It would be great to hear how you would like to use the space for your group or activitiy! You can capture this on the map using a comments item and write your need/idea for the space that can support your group activity. Alternatively, please do get in touch at [email protected].
